What is Direct Instruction (STARS)?

Direct Instruction (now called STARS; "Students Taking Accelerated Roads to Success") is a option within Special Education.  If the Admission, Review, & Dismissal (ARD) committee has determined that your child is significantly behind in Reading, Writing, or Math, he/she can receive STARS instruction in that subject.  It is a scheduled time that your child will come down for that subject and work on IEP (Individualized Education Program) objectives that have not yet been mastered from previous years. The amount of time that your child spends in a STARS class depends on the amount of extra help he or she requires in the specific subject area(s) in which he qualifies.  The amount of time is determined in an ARD committee meeting.
