Does my child need Special Education?

First, talk to your child's teacher.  Does he or she feel the same?  The teacher may already have concerns about your child's progress and be planning to contact you, but either way, it is really important to keep the communication lines between you and your child's teacher open.

If you and your child's teacher feels that his/her classroom performance warrants further study, she will contact our principal, Mrs. Nunez.  A Pre-Referral packet will be started.  This packet discusses and recommends instructional and behavior strategies for your child.  After these strategies have been tried, another meeting will be set up to look and see if the strategies are working.  If they are not, then a Student Success Portfolio (SSP) will be started.  The Student Success Team will meet (the classroom teacher, principal, a special education teacher, and the Speech Pathologist, if needed) to discuss further strategies as in Reading Recovery, Academic Development, etc.  After these have been tried, another meeting will occur.  At this meeting the decision will be made whether or not a recommendation for Special Education is needed.

At this point the school needs to get your permission to test your child.  It is in your rights to deny the school to test your child.  If you do give permission, your child will be given a battery of tests to determine IQ and see his/her performance in several academic areas.  An Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meeting will be held to go over the testing results and to decide if your child qualifies for Special Education help.  If your child qualifies, it will be at this point when you accept or deny these Special Education services.
